Jesse Norman has built a great reputation as a constituency MP since he was first elected in 2010.
He has helped to raise £120 million in public investment in Herefordshire, including for new wards at the Hospital, the Enterprise Zone, our new NMITE university, the new skatepark, cycle track and electric buses, and extending superfast broadband across the county. Most recently he has helped to win a further £102 million to support new investment in local roads.
Jesse and his team also worked on almost 6,000 individual constituency cases for local people in 2023, ranging from benefits to farm payments to flood claims.
During the Covid pandemic, he ran the Government Furlough Scheme, alongside his wife Dame Kate Bingham who headed up the Vaccine Task Force. He spent six years in government, including roles such as Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Paymaster General, Minister of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
As a backbencher, he is was a member of the Defence Select Committee, having been elected to the Treasury Committee in 2010, and as Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee in 2015-16. Jesse was Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year and The House Backbencher of the Year in 2012. and was made a Privy Councillor in 2019.
Jesse is very far from a career politician. Before becoming an MP he was a Director at Barclays, researched and taught philosophy at University College London, and ran a charitable project in Communist Eastern Europe, among other things.
He is the author of numerous books and pamphlets, including biographies of Edmund Burke and Adam Smith, and most recently a widely acclaimed historical novel, which won a Parliamentary Book Award in 2024.
Jesse has degrees in Classics (Oxford University: MA) and philosophy (University College London: MPhil, PhD). He has held various academic research fellowships, and was elected as a Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford in 2022. He is an enthusiastic cyclist, hill-walker and amateur jazz musician.
